4Simple but Solid replica of the iconic UNSC workhorse.Sep 23, 2010
By WunderChivo
Disclaimer: My review for this toy is based on a retail purchase. Amazon's pre-order was delayed so I cancelled and bought a second one at retail, both were identical in Pros and Cons.

Pros: It's a 15" long, 8" tall Warthog IFV, straight from the game, and it will fit most TMP Halo figures (although the earlier Halo3 figures may look a little small in this beast). The figures fit in the seats just fine and can easily hold the steering wheel and shifter. The rear machinegun has nothing to brace the gunner's feet, only the gun handles to hold him/her in place.
Unlike the more 'fragile' ATV Mongoose by TMP, this Warthog is built of sturdier plastics and made to last. Definitely more a toy than a model. Have fun beating this up indoors or outdoors. Clear windshield, rubber tires, and lots of accurately sculpted details. A very clean paint job with no bleeding or smudging of paint, in solid greens and greys (UNSC symbols on the driver's side) and some "worn" texture for metal areas and the tires.

Cons: For the price the only features are: spinning wheels, turning steering wheel, and a rear machinegun that raises and rotates 360 degrees. For what it is, the toy is fine, but some extra "play features" might have knocked this out of the park. A working winch would have been really nice.
Also, the "suspension" is accurate to the game with 4 separate struts (1 per wheel) and has a little flexible give so this is great for a little "bounce" while rolling along. However, the rear tires are a little too close to the chassis, so if you push from the back of the vehicle there's so little clearance that the rear tires tend to rub up against the fenders and if the treads catch they stop forward motion altogether. This problem may vary from toy to toy, and is the only obvious detraction I found, but it really should be fixed with any future re-releases. Toy customizers may feel ambitious about fixing this themselves, or go further and add lights, etc.

Note (12-7-11): I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but I discovered a way to fix the Warthog's rear suspension and "loose turret". Please understand, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY if you attempt these "fixes" on your own Warthog toy. I'm just offering my experience to fellow collectors. :)

The suspension is a bit tricky to explain. Basically the 2 rear struts, which appear separate on the outside of the Warthog, are in fact one molded piece joined by a cross-bar inside the truck, screwed to 2 posts inside. You can see this if you remove the turrent and look inside the vehicle. You want to find the 2 screws on the hull's underside that hold the struts to the hull, and replace them with longer screws (hardware store). The longer screws should 'push' the cross-bar further from the posts inside, thus lowering the struts away from the Warthog's fenders. If done correctly, the wheels can spin freely without catching, and you get a nice, bouncy suspension as a bonus. I cannot say whether this compromises the plastic material for the struts or the crossbar, but I have not had issues with it since, and at least it does not require damaging the toy to modify.

The loose turret requires more care, and I've noticed it varies from toy to toy. I haven't noticed this problem with the Gauss or Rocket Launcher replacement turrets. If you look at the cylyndrical base of each gun turret, there are 4 sections with ridges on the bottom edges. These ridges are meant to keep the turret locked in, once it's in place. However, sometimes they don't 'flange' out enough to lock in, so the turret might fall out during play. If you have a pair of flathead pliars (no teeth) then you can carefully bend those 4 sections outward just a TINY bit (doesn't take much!), and they will protrude just enough for the ridges to snap properly and keep the turret in place.

4McFarlane Toys Halo Reach Series 1 Deluxe Warthog Vehicle Box SetDec 08, 2010
By John R. Dailey Jr. "jrd02"
Hello,

I purchased this item for my son, who is fascinated with everything like this. He has since had one major battle with the enemy after the other. He really enjoys it and it shows no signs of tearing up. If you purchase this, your child will like it.

Thanks

3Only worth the money for die hard Halo fans...Dec 29, 2010

My son loves Halo, and so he HAD to have these toys. There really isn't any other option. Unfortunately, the quality is poor in relation to the price. It breaks easily and doesn't "do" much. If you are buying these toys for a die hard Halo fan, then it is worth it. If not, then pass. You can get better quality toys for much less money elsewhere.

2Not like GI Joe's of the 80sJan 04, 2011
By Travis L. Smith
I got his for my sons as they are into everything Halo and recently purchased some halo action figures. I had GI Joe action figures in the 80's and several of the vehicles that went with them. I still have and my sons play with some of those all these years later. Unlike those toys the Halo action figures and this vehicle are disappointing in the following ways.

The Spartan figures are too large to fit into this vehicle or to be posed with the turret.

The marine action figures do not bend in such a way as to sit properly in the vehicle.

The action figures are not posable with both hands holding the turret gun.

The front winch is molded plastic and does not operate. The one on my GI Joe Jeep does.

The turret does not snap into place so it continually falls out.

The wheels are all mounted independently of each other and bind up on the fenders and do not allow the vehicle to roll (move).

The plastic appears to be more fragile I am sure something will break very quickly.

As to the action figures they are very difficult to pose standing up. GI Joe's were much easier and also had a base plate that the action figure mounted to for this purpose.

The action figures do not hold there accessories well or in any realistic pose. Good luck not losing the grenades. Back packs and helmets constantly pop off.

I would like to say that these are either display figures or toys but they aren't successfully either.
